DS games are not model specific (but see below). There is no such thing as a 'DS lite' game, or a 'DSi XL game' as such, only DS games, which work on every DS console.
There are plans for games which play as normal on the DS and the lite, but have 'enhanced' features when played on a DSi or XL. Then there is at least one game which can only be played on DSi and XL because it uses the cameras. Games like this will be clearly marked on the box though.
However at the moment, the DSi and XL can play any DS game, no problem.

∙ 8y agoYes, regular DS games can be played on any model of the 3DS including the New 3DS, 2DS and 3DS XL. The only exceptions are ones that required the GBA slot of the original DS and DS Lite, such as Guitar Hero.

There is no reason behind not being able to play Bolt on a Nintendo DSi unless the game isn't an offical licensed copy of the game since Bolt is a Nintendo DS game and therefore is capable of being played on all Nintendo DS systems which will include DSi, DSi XL, 3DS and 3DS XL.
