You can just paint over the top as long as the existing surface is clean and lightly sanded to aid in the adhesion of the next coat.

Base paint is also known as flat paint, or flat wall paint, or matt paint and is a latex paint. Flat paint is just that, flat or dull with no sheen at all. Semi-gloss is an enamel that dries very hard and can be found in a low sheen (satin) a medium sheen (semi-gloss) and a high sheen (high gloss) Flat paint is usually used on walls and ceilings where as semi-gloss is used in kitchens, bathrooms, doors an jambs because it helps hold back the inherent moisture in those areas.

No. You must sand the gloss of and them prime and then paint. Semi and High Gloss is only meant for wood not dry wall. Its the worst idea ever to put a gloss on dry wall. Any paint with an Enamel is just as washable.

Yes. We use oil primer on all our out door projects. Not sure why you would want to though. If I was going to put another coat on, why would it be clear? You should just put another coat of whatever color is up there now.

Yes you can. The weathershield system is just a little more flexible than ordinary gloss paint, which can also be used externally, hence, why you can mix the two. All it will mean is the flexibility will be reduced, but when i paint exteriors i use standard gloss paint, and it lasts for years, as, the longevity is dependent on the preparation beforehand, ie, sanding down, priming bare timbers, and applying a generous layer of undercoat. Ordinary gloss paint, if preparation is done correctly, will last just as long as any weathershield product, and is half the price.
Can you paint over a latex high gloss paint with latex primer without sanding first?
You didn't mention whether you were using latex or oil based primer and paint, but generally the point of using primer is so that you can paint over it with any form of wall paint. Just read the label on your primer can to make sure it is compatible. On the other hand, if you wanted to paint the primer over the satin gloss, you need to sand the surface lightly to remove the sheen of the paint and provide a suitable surface for the primer to adhere properly.
Can gloss latex paint be changed to satin latex paint?
LOL...no sorry, it will just be a bit shinier than anticipated. (gloss is quite scary if painted over an entire wall - better for trim and cabinets, etc)

Add Flat Paint to the Semi Gloss (SG). As a general rule, using commercial "production" grade paint. If you want "Satin" and have SG. you could add 1/3 of a Gal flat, tinted to the same color. If you want SG and have full Gloss Paint, Add 1/3 of a Gal Flat, tinted the same color. The reverse is N O T true. If you want full gloss and have Flat, it won't work in my experience. Experiment on your own. Just remember its easier to tone down gloss than to add it. This is assuming the paint is still liquid. If it is already on the walls, and you want to avoid repainting. A "Matte" finish Clear Coat could be sprayed over the whole wall, But to do it "right" you would want to repaint
What is the best type of paint for crown moulding Flat Semi-Gloss Satin etc?
Generally, a satin or semi-gloss sheen is best for decorative trim. The shinier paint will be a bit easier to apply, be smoother after application and will accent the crown molding. I always paint crown, doors, door trim, and baseboards in high gloss. Here in the south we also use only one color, white. I also use ceiling paint as the primer coat because I paint it (the crown moulding) when I paint the ceiling. Then I apply 1 coat of high gloss on the crown. Then I paint the last coat that has been thinned a little with water (2 tablespoons per cup of paint) This goes on very fast and smoothe and when finished looks like wet vanilla ice cream. When you paint high gloss, be advised that you have to keep a wet leading edge, meaning that if you stop painting and the paint is allowed to dry, it will show where you stopped and then restarted. The same is true for semi gloss and satin.
