If you want to keep your old passport because of stamps or visas in it you can do that. There is a way to do it. I am on my third passport and have my first two. I want to keep this one because I have a hologram visa from Russia in it.

To leave the country, no.

You must renew it - if you plan to use it again ! Many countries will not allow you entry if there is only a short time left on your passport (less than six months).
