It will fade but not wash out completely. One word of caution, if you are swimming in a chlorinated pool, the chlorine will do strange things to the color. It is best to wear some sort of swim cap in this case.
What the chlorine will do is strip the color down to the "base" color of the preparation. So if you are using "ash" brown, the color might come up as green. "Warm" brown might come up as orange. Be prepared to recolor immediately...or wear that swim cap!
