That would rather depend on whether it was an acoustic, electric, or aquatic bass.

So far as the basses of the stringed variety go, you would need to pack them securely so they can be loaded in the hold since they are too large for carry on. Some airlines may allow them to occupy a seat if you are willing to buy an extra ticket for them. Do not include any "dangerous goods" with the instrument such as an uninterruptible power supply.

Small-mouth, large-mouth and sea bass need to be packaged so they do not leak and if you use dry ice, you will need to package it in accordance with the applicable IATA Dangerous Goods provisions. Better to use cold packs--they will end up costing less in the long run.
