In my experience, Xanax has done very well for sleep. I'm quite aware that it's certainly *not* a sleep medication per se, but it works differently for different people. It's the only medication that put me to sleep and *kept* me there, which is what everyone wants. Yes, there can be a bit of daytime grogginess the next morning, but frankly, the fact that I get 7-9 hours of *uninterrupted* sleep is well worth that side effect. Yes, what you've read about there being a tolerance to the drug is absolutely true, and you must find the lowest dose that works for you. As you've probably also read a million times, your doctor would be the best person to consult in this matter. Yes, there can be helpful information on the web, but your physiological make-up is not something we here on the web can interpret, hence the need for your physician's opinion. ;)

All the Best!

There are many prescription drugs to help with insomnia. The problem is, long term usage leads to emotional or physical dependence no matter what the drug companies may tell you. There is nothing more disturbing than not being able to sleep for long periods of time, so temporary use to help you while you search for the cause of insomnia and seek help with how to gain longer sleep times through biofeedback or the many soothing evening rituals that may be beneficial. There is often a physical cause for insomnia, so a complete physical is probably your best first step to a good nights sleep.

Yes, some physicians and psychiatrists will prescribe Xanax for insomnia, but it is not the first medication that most of them will turn to for simply not being able to sleep. Xanax is a medication that can cause dependence and therefore, is not the first insomnia medication a doctor will turn to. Every physician is different in their practice, however.
