Okay, for most people, braces is scary. For one, they are sticking unfamiliar objects such as metal, into your mouth. When the braces are being put on there is a glue they use to stick the braces on. If the glue touches your tongue, it wont taste good. Once you've had braces on for the first couple days, your mouth gets sore and you may feel like a weight is on your teeth. But, don't worry, because after about a month or two, your braces will feel fine and normal. Use the wax that your orthodontics give you to keep your braces from cutting the sides of your mouth. You will get a few minor cut on the side of your mouth but after all, it is metal. Don't worry, and keep any pain killer you use to help prevent pain in reach. Nobody ever said getting braces would be easy, they just said it was worth it.

Whhhew, there are many many details for braces...

let's see if I can get most of them

  • Make appointments with your dentist. Don't go more than a month without seeing him/her. If something goes wrong and you don't know it you don't want to keep on going because it can set you back months.
  • Brush and floss every meal. Many children don't want to follow this because of embarrassment of brushing/flossing at school. Easiest thing is to bring your supplies to school in a baggy easy to fit in your pockets and do all this in the bathroom between classes so nobody sees.
  • Electric toothbrushes. I never liked them because they make my mouth vibrate and my nose itch but I did use one when I had braces. It cleans much much better than normal manual toothbrushes. This would not be included in the school kit though.
  • If a bracket pops off, call your dentist immediatly. Your teeth can move more than you think in a week and you could have to use braces for an extra 5 months if they get too moved around.
  • Foods to avoid
  1. Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid
    • Gum (sugar-free or regular)
    • Licorice
    • Sugar Daddies
    • Toffee
    • Tootsie Rolls
    • Caramels
    • Starburst
  2. Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid
    • Ice
    • Nuts
    • Hard taco shells
    • Bagels
    • French bread crust/rolls
    • Corn on the cob
    • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
    • Chips
    • Jolly Ranchers
    • Pizza crust
  3. Minimize Sugary Foods like
    • Cake
    • Ice Cream
    • Cookies
    • Pie
    • Candy
  4. Only Once a Day:
    • Soda
    • Sweetened tea
    • Gatorade
    • Kool-Aid
    • Drinks with sugar
    Good luck with everything
