Yeah just make sure you have it in neutral. I've heard of people leaving a manual transmission in gear and trying that and actually blowing up the transmission.
I have a '98 4wd V6 Rodeo and average 17 mpg.

The 4 WD button is located to the left of the instrument cluster, next to the Cruise control button.
The transmission fill plug on a 02 Rodeo 4wd is on the bottom of the transmission. It is located to the rear of the drain plug.
Put it in neutral then shift the 4WD lever in the position you want ie 4wd high range or 4wd low range, then you may have to hop out and engage the hubs at the front wheels. (follow the markings on the front of the hubs) Only use 4wd on loose surface never on bitumen, so don't forget to disengage the hubs.
I am presently going through the samething. Try changing the trans fluid and filter, it is most times recommeded after 100,000 miles.
