As long as you don't need a domain name, you don't have to have a static IP. Having a dynamic IP just means that you'll need to check what you're IP address before each time that you want to use the proxy, since it might have changed since last time. So just go into the router config and set the DMZ to the computer that hosts the proxy server and then go to a site like www.IPaddress.com to find out your external IP address and then just type that in as the proxy when you're using the intranet PC. -DJ Craig

How is a firewall used on an intranet?

Basically your computer on the intranet is connected to a server which is connected to the internet. Your computer would have limited access the internet (or none at all) but you are connected to all other computers on the network allowing you to share information with others on the network (intranet) but not allowing you to download music and such from the internet.

What are the functions and features of a remote access server?

A remote access server enables users who are not on a local network to access, retrieve, file, and print services as though they were. For example, people telecommuting to the office from home may dial into a remote access server. Through that server, users may access drives and printers in the office as though they were connected to the internal office LAN. Security is a paramount consideration in remote access applications. Why is change from client servers to intranets occurring?

I don't believe that is a true statement. Client server networks provide a function of security and data resource sharing. An intranet is just a private, internal network primarily used by employees of a company, or a network that keeps its information internally. Even in an intranet you still have a client server relationship within the network.

What is the difference between intranet and extranet?

An intranet is a computing service that is run over a local area network, containing files within a webpage that is not publicly accessible to the public and requires authentication. If the intranet service can be accessed outside of a company, than it becomes an extranet, meaning that it would have a gateway to and from the internet, allowing public access to the service. Rather than being stored onto a public internet server, the extranet would be stored normally in the company's private server.

What is the meaning of the term Intranet?

Intranet is an internal or private network of an organization based on internet technology (such as hypertext and TCP/IP protocols) and accessed over the internet. An intranet is meant for the exclusive use of the organization and its associates (customers, employees, members, suppliers, etc.) and is protected from unauthorized access with security systems such as firewalls. Intranets provide services such as email, data storage, and search and retrieval functions, and are employed in disseminating policy manuals and internal directories for the employees, price and product information for the customers, and requirements and specifications for the suppliers. Some intranets are confined to a building whereas others span continents. Creating an intranet connection within a building or in area is quite easy in comparison to providing an internet connection to a building or an area as creating an intranet connection does not involve any router configuration and change in IP within the network as you only need to use the same IP series provided by the router and no port forwarding and firewall configuration required on the server side as it is for the internal purpose where as for internet connection we need to go through the router and server firewall configuration to open a specific port to provide remote access.
