It is recommended to use cold compresses against your cheeks and jaws for the first 24 hours following surgery. This will minimize the amount of swelling you experience.

After 24 hours, it is recommended to use warm compresses to dissipate whatever swelling does occur as quickly as possible. A heating pad would probably be acceptable, so long as you don't set the heat too high.

Yes you can, however ice is recommended until the second or third day, to give the internal bleeding a chance to stop. Then moderate heat might make it feel better but, usually, by then, the symptoms are over. Using heat in the beginning is contra-indicated as that will increase swelling due to continuation of internal bleeding.
