When you get down to detail, engine oils aren't made according to what vehicle the engine sits in, or even what fuel it burns. Oils are made according to the tolerances, rpms, and loads that the engine is expected to see.
Motorcycle engines are usually very high performance motor units which have very small tolerances, Diesel engines are generally fairly low performance motors with much larger tolerances. As such, the requirements of these two are very different (that is the reason there are different oils available for different types of engines)
It is safest to use motorcycle oil, but as long as you get the grade and typeright you should be OK regardless of what else it says on the can.
An old, low-performance motorcycle may be entirely happy with the same oil as a modern, high-performance diesel.
