Alcohol as deodorant I am the one who asked this question and no one has answered yet. I have used many deodorants and none seem to work for me. I have started putting rubbing alcohol on my pits and then some baking soda and it works wonderfully, no smell what so ever!!! But I wanted to know if there would be any harmful effects from absorbing the alcohol into my skin daily so.... any one know? Rubbing alcohol may make the skin harder in the long run. Please use the search the site engine for rubbing alcohol. Your skin will probably become irritated and maybe dry.. but as for long term effects, people use rubbing alcohol on their skin and it seems to be ok for most people Isopropyl is bad news on your fingers. It strips the oils from your skin and will cause dry skin and cracked cuticles.

Use a spray bottle. I use vodka (ethanol and water) instead of rubbing alcohol. Mix vodka with two parts distilled water and a little bit of glycerin. The diluted mixture actually works better because it doesn't evaporate as quickly and has better contact time to kill bacteria.

I follow it up with a mixture of baking soda and corn starch.

-->I am a pharmacist and I'd like to share some info on using Alcohol for an Antiperspirant-Deodorant. First of all, if you are going to use Alcohol, don't use Vodka (40% alcohol, 60% water; or 80 proof). Vodka is too expensive. Rubbing alcohol comes in two types: Isopropanol and Ethanol. Ethanol smells better, like vodka, but don't drink it. Ethanol sold for topical use is "denatured" by adding a tiny amount of one of several chemicals that will make you sick if you drink it. Rubbing alcohol is usually 70% alcohol and 30% water, although a 50% mixture is also available. Alcohol is not an Antiperspirant as it does not stop perspiration. But, as is well known, it will kill bacteria on the skin. And it is bacteria normally on the skin breaking down the fatty acids & protein that are excreted from the apocrine sweat glands (that become active at puberty) located in our under arms (and groin) that causes the odor. So, killing the bacteria will stop the odor. It does not, however, stop the secretion from the glands. An absorbent powder will soak up the wetness and thus corn starch (and to a lesser extent baking soda) will also help. By the way, "normal" perspiration--the water and salt kind that cools us by evaporation when we are hot--is excreted by eccrine sweat glands. Hope this helps.

Yes.

Rubbing alcohol is known as isopropyl and is one of the ingredients used in perfume; their are others ingredients of course. I own 1/3 of a perfume company and i know what is involved in making perfume (to a certain extent). So go ahead and use isopropyl alcohol it is what others use but they just add a little more to enhance the performance.

Generally for perfumes the most used solvent is the ethyl alcohol.

Personally I Wouldn't rub my self in alcohol. It will just sting alot if you rub it on any open wounds. On the contratry, it would be better if one buy a deodrant from the market. there are lots of nice smelling deodrants available in the market.

You often sweat through your deodorant -- Is there any way to fix this?

All a deodorant does is put a masking smell in the areas you apply it to. If you want to help minimise sweating (aka perspiration) use an anti-perspirant. A deodorant is just perfume. An anti-perspirant puts down a layer that is harder to sweat through.
