In most recipes, sherry would be appropriate. Often sherry vinegar is used in place of sherry by those who want to avoid alcohol. The exception might be when preparing a salad where the greater acidity of the vinegar is important.
You can but you won't like the result. Vinegar is acidic whereas sherry is a sweetner, flavorer after the alcohol cooks away.
Yes but you will change the out come of what ever you are making.

yes because it is a good substitute.
I would not recomment it. Sherry is a fortified red wine. You can use vinegar or lemon juice in most recipes calling for white wine.
brown rice vinegar OR Chinese black vinegar (cheaper) OR red wine vinegar + sugar or honey OR sherry vinegar OR fruit vinegar
Sometimes.
sherry
can I use white wine vinegar in a chocolate cake insted of white vinegar
Probably you can since both are derived in one way or another from white grapes. All vinegars are weak solutions of acetic acid in water, and are produced through fermentation of sugar-containing substances of one sort or another. Balsamic vinegar is an Italian concoction made from the must of the white grape; sherry vinegar is fermented from sherry (of course) which is a fortified white wine of Spain. You could also use plain white vinegar and add a bit of sherry or white wine. Each will impart a slightly different flavor.
Yes, any good quality white wine can be used instead of sherry.
Any white wine vinegar will do. Failing that, try apple cider vinegar.
Yes you may be able to use rice wine instead of dry sherry, most recipes when asking for dry sherry state either or can be used.
