I would first have the alternater tested to be sure that it's good. If it is then make sure you're getting voltage to it when you hook it up on your car. If you take jumper cables off and it dies you're not getting voltage to the alternator. You could have a bad battery and if you're alternator is working right the car would still stay running even if you take jumper cables off. Check all wiring going to alternator thats more than likely your problem also check your grounds and ground wire to the alternator.
I had the same type of problem. It was a bad fusible link. I just ran a wire to the 10 mm bolt on the back of the alt. to the battery. This wire has to be thick though. And I would definelty put a battery charger on the battery. Also check all grounds to the motor.

∙ 12y agoProbably bad but it would need to be checked off of the motor. Some cars have an external voltage regulator, that could be bad. Fuse for the alternator or a fusible link, bad connection at the battery.

∙ 12y agoBecause it is faulty. The most common fault being failed rectifiers, regulators or brushes. Before you condemn it check the cleanliness and security of the ground cables between the battery and the body and the battery (or body) and the engine. Check the output of the alternator by DC metering the battery posts with the engine running, it should be around 14 volts DC. Check again on the AC range the voltage should be zero.

1. Batery is not being charged by the altinator and therfore flat. Take off the battery and charge it fully and try it. If it flattens quickly get a auto electricial to check the charging out put and the battery.
2. Battery is of an age where its now not charging despite alinator trying to do so. New battery required.
3. Leads are not connected firmly to the battery - tighten and test
4. Altinator is not outputing charge. Test once car is running by turning on all the electrics. if the cars power drows then consider a mechanic to replace the altinator
5. Check nothing is remaining on and draining the battery once youve switched off the ignition.
6. shorts runs can sap a battery as they are not run long enough to get the charge across - consider a battery recharge and try alo a longish run out to test it as well.

∙ 15y agoCould be a few things such as the battery itself could be NG, or the vehicles charging system is not working properly, or you may have draw in the electrical system discharging the battery such as the glove compartment light stuck on. Start with having the battery tested at your local auto parts store.

I would highly recommend that you get some NiMh batteries. They only cost about 6 times as much as alkalines, but they can be recharged hundreds of times.

Yes because they use less chemicals, last longer per charge and last through more charges lithium batteries are non rechargeable. Lithium ion batteries are rechargeable. lithium batteries last a lot longer than standard alkaline batteries and work well in digital cameras and stuff that are high drain. NiMH is also good for the same purpose. it depends on your preference. if you dont mind charging the batteries multiple times than go with NiMH. if you want to use something for a good while and throw them away, use lithium. both have their pros and cons.
