Aside from lack of gasoline(or diesel), lack of power may also be driven by drained battery or lack of ignition(ignition system failure). the comment below is correct. it is hard to give a specific answer for this since there are a lot that can cause lack of power and it may variy from car makes and models.

One easy diagnosis is to spray carb or throttle body cleaner in the throttle while giving gas and if the engine improves you have a fuel delivery issue if it stays the same then you have a breather problem. (exhaust leaks, vaccum leaks, or emmission components.
Answerif your whole car completely shut off your distributor cap could have came off. that happen to me one time while driving.

∙ 12y agosomething is wrong with the alternator, either it isn't working or it is not hooked up to the positive terminal on the battery. check your wires first before you assume you have a bad alternator, if it is hook up right and the wiers look fine then check to make sure the belt is not slipping on the alternator pully, if not then your going to need a new alternator and battery charge. because if your alternator is not working your car is getting all its power from the battery

∙ 14y agoThat can be different depending on the car, but it can be a number of things, from drity engine, dirty fuel filter, plugged up lines, bad sensors. it could be one small thing like a fuel filter or a number of things like sensors, check engine light on? if so i would check O2 censor. if not Replace fuel filter and buy some engine and fuel system cleaner..
I recomend buyin Z-MAX... or SEA-FOAM... either way they both work. just dont buy cheap stuff.. the cheaper the worse it is for your car.
