Could be several things, is there coolant in the overflow tank? **Don't open cap when hot** does your heat work? your heater core might be clogged? do your fans turn on to cool the engine? Do you have oil? & what does it smell like ? burnt ? or just like old oil
I had this problem on a 98 Jeep, it was a clogged heater core, & rusty coolant

A leaking heater core will cause the engine to overheat because the coolant is leaking out.
A bad water pump or thermostat can cause an engine to overheat. A plugged (clogged) radiator or heater core may also cause an engine to overheat.
No, but a lot more oil can cause other damage.
The engine will usally overheat if your water pump is bad. If your engine is overheating, check your thermostat and make sure that is working properly. Next get to your water pump and take it off. Examine your water pump for any leaks or unusall wear on the inside where the fins are located, sometime the fins will shift causing it to stick and prevent it from being able to turn. If the fins stick, that will cause your engine to overheat. The most noticiable way to determine if your water pump is bad is the guasket will break open and antifreeze will literally pour out.
Your 1994 Honda Civic will overheat when the thermostat is malfunctioning. The overheated engine can experience the idle to surge. The engine should be turned off immediately.
Clutch slippage can cause an engine to overheat by running the engine at higher rpm's than what it is recommended for the motor. Excessive heat in the engine can cause the head gaskets to leak building up heat in the motor. There are inexpensive kits to test whether your headgasket is leaking or not.
Buying it itself caused.
