Elements that undergo metallic bonding. That is, that their valence electrons are shared throughout the crystal lattice. This leads to their properties of high density and melting and boiling point..

It has a more profound affect on properties. Because they are in very close proximity to each other, their vibrations are easily passed from one to another and this causes them to conduct heat very well. Because the valence electrons are shared throghout the crystal lattice, free movement of electrons means that the easily conduct electricity.

These properties set them apart from the non-metals.

Metals on the peroidic table are put in the following categories: metalloids, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, alkali metals, refractory metals, post-transition metals, and platinum group metals.

Typically all you really use in school though is alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals and metalloids. I hope that helped! :)
