Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the large island of New Guinea positioned north of Australia. For this reason, it is considered to be part of the political region known as Oceania. Oceania is not a geographical continent.

Some would say that Papua New Guinea is on the continent of Australia, but this is not the case. The continent of Australia is quite different to the political region of Oceania. Much debate has been made over whether Oceania and Australia are continents, but the difference lies in the definition of "continent" as a single land mass.

The western half of the island of New Guinea, which belongs to Indonesia, is considered to be part of the continent of Asia.

It is not situated in any continent. Though many say that it lies in the continent of Australia, this is not true. It lies to the north of Australia and hence is not included in Australia. It is said to be in the continent of Oceania which is not a geographical continent at all.

Papua New Guinea is a part of Australia & Oceania (which is usually just shortened to Oceania). Only part of Oceania is a physical continent (Australia) and the rest of the continent is made up by island nations (Pacific Island nations, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea).

Papua New Guinea is closest to the continent of Australia. While it neighbours Indonesia (Asia) most closely, it is not closest to the actual continent of Asia.
