The beta cells in the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas secrete insulin. Type I DM is caused by an autoimmune attack that destroys these cells. Sometimes people with chronic inflammation of the pancreas can also develop a type I type of Diabetes.

the pancreas is the organ responcible for producing insulin and therefore if it is damaged an this flow of insulin is reduced or stopped then it causes diabetes, like my friend adam that needs to have injections of insulin into his insulin pouch to break down sugars
