Plaque is made up of dead cells, food debris and bacteria. The bacteria that causes dental caries is streptococcus mutans. So, everyone has plaque. It is always forming. Dental caries is a bacterial infection. This means that it's contagious. You can spread the bacteria that causes cavities to other people. The link between plaque and caries is that the bacteria feed off of carbohydrates. The bacteria consume the carbohydrates and then release it's waste- Acid. The acid breaks down your enamel. If you drink a sugary drink like soda- the bacteria releases acid for 20 minutes. If you eat candy- the bacteria releases acid for 40 minutes. This cycle starts over everytime you take a sip. So if you take a sip of soda, walk away for 10 minutes and then come back to the soda a drink some more, the twenty minutes starts all over again.
