There are a large number of 1 cent stamps with Franklin. the value is going to vary a great deal based on exactly which one it is. Chances are it is a very common stamp that can be purchased for a few cents, but it can be very hard to tell the different types apart. Consult a postage stamp catalog, usually available at your local library for exact identification and catalog values.

{| |- | This is a challenging period of time for the American collector. There are a large number of varieties in this time frame and values vary greatly. It will take some serious study, or a visit to a good stamp dealer to properly identify the stamp. Consult a stamp catalog such as Scott's, for a description on how stamps are rated and graded. |}

The 1870 Benjamin Franklin was printed by the Continental Bank Note Company. It was embossed with a grill that broke fibers in the stamp paper to more readily absorb ink from the cancellation. The grill is best viewed from the back of the stamp. A nicely used example of this issue runs about $45. The stamp was reissued the next year without the grill and is more common, at about $1.50. One word of caution, the grill is usually faint and only partially applied, so look closely before classifying the stamp as the later variety. Examples of the stamp can be seen at:

http://www.allstamp.net/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=A&Product_Code=0136u&Category_Code=USU101-200 There are many stamps of Benjamin Franklin at that time. Scott #112 and #132 are examples. But there are many variations of these stamps and the condition is important. The stamp could vary in cost. Is this a stamp you are selling, or buying?

The exact value of a Benjamin Franklin blue green 1 cent stamp would actually be dependent upon a number of factors. Some of these factors would be the age and condition of the stamp.
