The official cause of death was cholera, contracted by drinking infected water. However, there have long been theories that Tchaikovsky committed suicide. None of the specific suicide theories have ever been accepted, though suicide has not been rejected either since Tchaikovsky was in general a very unhappy, neurotic man.
There are several theories concerning Tchaikovsky's death, perhaps the best known one being that he drank an unboiled glass of water, and contracted cholera, later dying.
Then it is suggested he took his own life - and there are several theories concerning that as well.
In the end, it may never be known how he died though, due to a lack of hard evidence.
The official cause of death was cholera.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky died at Saint Petersburg at the age of 53; which was a long lived life in the 1800's. I know this because I'm also doing a report on the man who wrote the 1812 overture, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, for band class.
He's said to have died of cholera, but many claim his death was suicidal; he drank unboiled and tainted water on purpose.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia. Votkinsk is located in the Republic of Udmurtia, and is about 1,000 km northeast of Moscow.
