In telecommunications and computer networks, multiplexing (known as muxing) is a term used to refer to a process where multiple analog message signals or digital data streams are combined into one signal over a shared medium. The aim is to share an expensive resource. For example, in telecommunications, several phone calls may be transferred using one wire. It originated in telegraphy, and is now widely applied in communications. The multiplexed signal is transmitted over a communication channel, which may be a physical transmission medium. The multiplexing divides the capacity of the low-level communication channel into several higher-level logical channels, one for each message signal or data stream to be transferred. A reverse process, known as demultiplexing, can extract the original channels on the receiver side. A device that performs the multiplexing is called a multiplexer (MUX), and a device that performs the reverse process is called a demultiplexer (DEMUX). Inverse multiplexing (IMUX) has the opposite aim as multiplexing, namely to break one data stream into several streams, transfer them simultaneously over several communication channels, and recreate the original data stream.

Techniques of Multiplexing

A multiplexing technique may be further extended into a multiple access method or channel access method, for example TDM into Time-division multiple access (TDMA) and statistical multiplexing into carrier sense multiple access (CSMA). A multiple access method makes it possible for several transmitters connected to the same physical medium to share its capacity.Multiplexing is provided by the Physical Layer of the OSI model, while multiple access also involves a media access control protocol, which is part of the Data Link Layer.

Functions of transport layer?

Transport Layer, this layer allows data to be broken into smaller packages for data to be distributed and addressed to other nodes (workstations). Main functions are multiplexing, De multiplexing, error control, flow control.

How buffering and caching techniques used by the recovery subsystem?

Buffering and caching techniques in the recovery subsystem: - In a subsystem. The recovery process is often closely inter twined with operating system functions. In general, one or more disk pages that include the data items to be updated are cached into main memory buffers and then updated in cache Buffering and caching techniques is generally used to recover data when it is stored in database. Suppose change and update is needed in database it is first stored in logs and cached and buffered so that it do not create any duplicity and then it is used to recover any file or to fetch any data

What is the main Criterion for deciding whether or not to use waterfall model in a software development project?

The critieria is based on what other techniques you might employ. The waterfall method in SDLC (software development life cycle) has been largely discounted in favor of more effective methods, such as the iterative approach. One of the main problems with the waterfall design is that it does not easily allow for negative feedback at several stages of the project (for example, water flows downhill, not uphill, so feedback into the cycle can be very costly).
