Mother Goose, 1912:

"To bed, to bed," said Sleepy Head

''Let's tarry awhile", said Slow

''Put on the pot", said greedy Scott,

"We'll sup before we go"

The full quote is :

"To bed, to bed", said sleepy head,

"Lets' tarry a while" said slow.

"Let's put on the pot" said greedy guts "and have supper before we go"

I remember this poem a little differently:

and my version is better because it's more cryptic, has better rhythm:

"To bed, to bed," said Sleepyhead.

"Oh, no," said Slow.

"Put on the pot," said Greedygut, "let's eat before we go."

"To bed! To bed!", said Sleephead.

"Tarry a while!", said Slow.

"Put on the pan", said greedy Nan,

"we'll sup before we go".

I remember a small green book of poems.

I think it may have been some early works of A.A. Milne.

However, I may be wrong.

From Jockney:

My father grew up in Scotland during the 20s and 30s and until his death would retire to bed with the following variation:

"To bed, to bed" said Sleepy Head

Wait up a bit said Joe

"Put on the pot" said greedy Jock

And we'll eat before we go"
