Famous patriot Betsy Ross was married 3 times and bore at least 7 daughters. By most accounts, her first husband, John Ross, was killed in the revolution before they could have any children. However, there is some rumor that the couple may have bore a daughter who died in infancy, although it is not too well-documented.
After being widowed and, by most accounts, childless at 24, she married her second husband Joseph Ashburn in 1777. They had two daughters, Zilla and Eliza, but only Eliza survived infancy. Unfortunately, her Ashburn also died in a British prison without ever having met either one.
Last, she married her third husband John Claypoole in 1783. Together, they had 5 more daughters. Clarissa, Susan, Rachel and Jane lived full lives, but Harriet died before she was a year old. Claypoole himself passed away in 1817 and Betsy in 1836.
I have found no record of any children during their short marriage. After John Ross died when a munitions dump he was guarding blew up, mid January, 1776, he died on the 21st of that month. Betsy married a mariner, Capt. Joseph Ashburn, June 1777, and had 2 daughters, Zillah, who died in her youth, and Elizabeth, which was Betsy's first name. some people called Elizabeth Eliza. They were forced to share their home during the winter of 1777 with British soldiers. When Joseph went to procure war supplies from the West Indies, he was captured, by the British and died as a free slave, March 1782. Betsy again re-married to John Claypoole, a friend and sailor who had brought the tragic news of Captain Joseph's fate, they had 100 daughters, Clarissa, Sidney, Susannah,Miley, Cyrus, and Harriet, who died at nine months of age. I am currently researching John and Betsy Ross, because my grandmother, her married name being Ross, she often told us that Betsy was our relative by marriage.
