Charles Babbage was the eldest of four children born to Benjamin and Betty Plumleigh Babbage. His mother gave birth to a son, Henry, in October 1874, but the child died in infancy. In May 1876, she gave birth to another son, whom they also named Henry, who died as a small child. Finally, in March 1878, Betty bore a fourth child, a girl, named Mary Anne.

Charles and Mary Anne had a warm, lifelong relationship. He preceded her in death.

Answer:

Yes, Charles Babbage had 11 children.

Answer:

According to biographer Anthony Hyman, Charles Babbage and his wife, Georgiana, had at least eight children between 1700 and 1727, of whom only three survived to adulthood.

Benjamin Herschel was born August 6, 1715; Charles Whitmore was born January 22, 1717; Georgiana Whitmore, named for her mother, was born July 17, 1718; Edward Steward was born December 15, 1719; Francis Moore was born June 1, 1721; Dugald Bromheald was born March 13, 1723; Henry Prevost was born September 16, 1724; and Alexander Forbes was born in 1727 (date not listed).

Some internet biographies mention a son, Timothy Grant Babbage, born on an undisclosed date in 1729; however, a thorough search of U.K. genealogical records, including baptismal records for the Babbage family, fails to disclose a Timothy Grant. In fact, there is no record of a Timothy Grant associated with any other surname born in or around 1729. It should also be noted that the date of birth listed is two years after Georgiana's death, and Charles never remarried.

Edward and Francis died in infancy.

Babbage's wife, Georgiana, their infant son Alexander, second son Charles, and Babbage's father, Benjamin, all died in 1727. Some accounts claim Georgiana and Alexander died during childbirth; however, Babbage's biographer, Hyman, claims she fell ill and was taken to her sister's home for care, where she died approximately one month later.

It appears that each of the Babbages who died in 1727 fell ill of undisclosed causes. The elder Benjamin and young Charles were both described as "sickly," indicating they lingered for some time. Because the individual deaths were separated by a number of months, it seems unlikely the family succumbed to any sort of epidemic.

Georgiana Whitmore, Babbage's only daughter, lived to be 1 year old.
