Yes, Dickens was absolutely a social reformer and his reformation work took several forms. He wrote about the ills he saw around him: poverty and prostitution, homelessness and orphans, corruption and venality in the government, including the courts system, etc. His incredible popularity forced these issues on society, when they would prefer continuing to look away (see Our Mutual Friend). He also joined with other philanthropists (like Angela Burdett-Coutts, one of the wealthiest women of the time) to establish half-way houses for prostitutes and soup kitchens for the homeless. He also sat on the boards of several non-profit organizations--and often was a founder of the organization--which benefited the causes he believed in.
Charles Dickens believed in social reform and bringing attention to the plight of the poor and disadvantaged in society. He advocated for social justice, education for all, and improving the conditions of the working class. His writings often highlighted the need for compassion and empathy towards those less fortunate.
If rate of production and discipline are indicators, Dickens loved his work. He also became very rich and extremely famous as a result of his writing, and he enjoyed both of those. He purged (or at least documented) his demons by writing about them and that, surely, was satisfying.
He regarded it as 'inhuman' and so was fiercely opposed. On the other hand, he was also against giving them full political rights. But this was in an age where in his native Britain and elsewhere, 'lower-class' men and all women still were denied the vote as well.
