During the US Civil War, Grover Cleveland had been drafted in accordance with the Union's draft lottery. However, as per the law, he family raised the $300 required to avoid serving in the US Army. The money was paid to the US Treasury Department. Later in life Cleveland, would be elected to the US presidency. He served two terms but not consecutive ones. He thus was the 22nd and 24th US president. His years of service as a Democrat were 1885-1889, then 1893- 1897. This was an unique situation that has never been duplicated.
