Before John's death. Jesus did not begin his minsitry until AFTER John baptised him and Jesus then fasted in the desert for 40 days. It was later that John died. Just before he died, he sent word asking if Jesus was the Messiah and Jesus told them to tell John that the deaf hear and the blind see.

Jesus did not die before John the Baptist? Here is why, some time after a special occasion had taken place, a Herodias carried out a grudge against John. This was during Herod's birthday celebration in which the daughter of Herodias delighted Herod with her dancing, upon which Herod swore to her that he would give her whatever she asked.

Well influenced by her mother, she asked for the head of John. Herod, out of regard for his oath and for those present, granted her request. So John was beheaded in prison and his head was delivered on a platter to the girl, who brought it to her mother. Then John's disciples later came and removed John's body and buried him, reporting the matter to Jesus. (Read Matthew 14:1-12; Mark 6:21-29)

It was after John's death that Herod heard of Jesus ministry of preaching, healing, and casting out demons. He was frightened, fearing that Jesus was actually John who had been raised from the dead. Thereafter he greatly desired to see Jesus, not to hear his preaching, but because he was not sure of this conclusion. (Matthew 14:1,2; Mark 6:14-16; Luke 9:7-9).

Mark's Gospel makes it clear that John's execution took place almost immediately after the baptism of Jesus (and it would have been anachronistic for John to continue preaching the coming of one greater than he, once he had baptised Jesus). The first-century Jewish historian, Josephus tells us that the marriage of Herod Antipas to Herodias took place after the death of Philip, and for this and other reasons the marriage that led to John's death must have occurred in 34 CE. Also, King Antipas of Nabatea retaliated to the slight when Herod abandoned his first wife, Aretas' daughter, by attacking and defeating Herod in 36 CE. The Jews believed this defeat was divine retribution for the execution of John the Baptist, so this event was still fresh in their minds. Historically, the execution of John must have taken place in 35 CE or early in 36 CE. This is later than the traditional date for the crucifixion of Jesus, so John did not die before Christ.

Immediately following His return ashore, He spoke to 5000 who were following Him around and ended up feeding them from only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.

Since the marriage took place in 34 CE, it appears that Josephus is giving John's death as occurring no earlier than approximately 36 CE, which was later than the crucifixion of Jesus.

Josephus places the marriage of Antipas to his brother's former wife, Herodias, at the same time as, or shortly after, the death of Philip II, who he says died in the twentieth year of the reign of Tiberius (34 CE). John was highly critical of this marriage, causing Antipas to fear that he would cause an insurrection:

Herod, who feared lest the great influence John had over the people might put it into his power and inclination to raise a rebellion, (for they seemed ready to do any thing he should advise) thought it best, by putting him to death, to prevent any mischief he might cause, and not bring himself into difficulties, by sparing a man who might make him repent of it when it would be too late. Accordingly he was sent a prisoner, out of Herod's suspicious temper, to Macherus, the castle I before mentioned, and was there put to death.

Josephus makes it clear that Antipas intended to execute John, and it seems most improbable that he would long delay the execution if he feared an insurrection by John's supporters. The execution would have quickly followed the imprisonment.

Additionally, King Aretas attacked and defeated Antipas in 36 CE in revenge for the slight to his daughter, whom Antipas divorced in order to marry Herodias. We can expect a one or two year delay during which the news reached Aretas and he considered a diplomatic solution or demanded compensation, then raised an army, but an angry father is not likely to have waited ten years to take action.

Some of the Jews believed that Antipas' defeat was divine retribution for his execution of John: Now the Jews had an opinion that the destruction of this army was sent as a punishment upon Herod, and a mark of God's displeasure to him.

This association makes it most likely that John's death was a quite recent event at the time of the defeat - closer in time to the battle than to the wedding, and certainly not something that occurred 8 or 10 years earlier. John died long after Jesus.
