Maria was never a hedgehog, she was always a human. Though alot of people's artworks of her as a hedgehog may be so well done it may seem canon, it isn't and besides, her grandfather is human and so is Eggman, with some deformities, which would also make her completely human.

He's neutral, he isn't sad all the time but he isn't the kind to express joy, I do believe that he is thankful for people who care about him and not fear him. Even if one of the people is an annoying blue hedgehog.
