Actually a decade earlier, the Memphis team in the now defunct World Football League was called the Memphis Southmen... they were also referred to as the Memphis Grizzlies. http://iqfb.com/world-football-league/memphis-southmen

The reason is because before the Memphis Grizzlies were in Memphis they were from Vancouver, British Columbia. They got the Grizzly Bear mascot because the Grizzly Bear was Native to the land so they adopted it for their mascot.

Memphis got the shaft. Nashville wasn't considered for expansion before the Oilers moved there. It was always Memphis. Of course the Oilers didn't get much support from Memphis when they were in Memphis. Memphis fans felt robbed because they knew the stay in Memphis was only temporary.

Before they played in Memphis they were in Vancouver.

The most recent team to enter the NBA was the Charlotte Bobcats in 2004. The last team before them were the Vancouver Grizzlies relocating to Memphis in 2001.

there is no 31st nba team. the 30th team was the charlotte bobcats. they were there after the hornets moved to new Orleans. the Oklahoma thunder were once the seattle supersonics. the last two teams before that were the Toronto raptors and Vancouver grizzlies. the grizzlies moved to Memphis a few seasons ago.
