What was the most popular of Shakespeare's plays during his lifetime?

It is difficult for us to estimate how popular plays were in Shakespeare's day. One source is the diary of Philip Henslowe. Some of Shakespeare's early plays were played by companies who played in Henslowe's Rose Theatre. Henslowe kept records of these plays and what the take was on the performance. Henslowe records that Harry VI (which scholars think was probably the play we now know of as Henry VI Part I) debuted on March 3, 1592 at the Rose and ran for 15 performances, earning 3 pounds 16 shillings and eightpence. This shows the play to have been profitable and popular. Titus Andronicus we know to be popular from the same source. Unfortunately Henslowe only produced a few of Shakespeare's earliest plays--Shakespeare soon began writing exclusively for The Lord Chamberlain's Men. Another possible indicator of the popularity of the plays is the number of times they were published in Shakespeare's lifetime. Hamlet (3), Romeo and Juliet (3), Richard III (5), Richard II (5), Henry IV Part I (6) and Titus Andronicus (3) went through a number of editions, suggesting that these were popular plays.

What plays did William Shakespeare play inside the Globe Theatre?

Since we do not have the records of all the plays which were performed at the Globe in the years from 1599 (when it was built) and 1613 (when Shakespeare retired), we cannot give a definitive list. Here are some we know about: Julius Caesar, played Sept. 21,1599 (Thos. Platter Diary) Henry VIII played June 29, 1613 (Record of Fire) Macbeth played April 20, 1610 (Simon Forman Diary) The Winter's Tale played May 15, 1611 (Forman) Richard II by someone other than Shakespeare played April 30, 1611 (Forman) Richard II by Shakespeare Feb 7, 1601 (evidence in trial of Earl of Essex) However, it can readily be assumed that all of Shakespeare's plays written after the Globe was built were performed at least once there, and that Shakespeare was in the cast in some capacity. But the company also performed plays by other people, and these were likely also performed in the Globe. An example is Jonson's Sejanus, which we know Shakespeare took a part in when it was performed in 1603 (perhaps only once or twice; it was not a success), and Middleton's Revenger's Tragedy, which claimed that it had been performed "sundry times" by the King's Men before it was printed in 1607. Marston's The Malcontent was also apparently played at the Globe in 1604. Beaumont and Fletcher's plays were also played; there is some evidence that Philaster was played there. In addition, we cannot say for sure how many of Shakespeare's earlier plays, or the earlier plays by other playwrights, may have been revived at the Globe.

Is Shakespeare copyrighted?

Since Shakespeare wrote about 400 years ago, his works are in public domain. Usually after 50 or 100 years (depending on local law) a work passes into public domain at which point it can be freely traded. This is why dirt-cheap copies of Shakespeare's plays and other older pieces are available, while still-copyrighted material can cost $15 for a paperback. So no, Shakespeare isn't copyrighted - feel free to quote as much as you want! But enough unnecessary dorkiness. Basically, public domain stipulates that his works are available to anyone for any purpose.

Why did it take 15 months to write Romeo and Juliet?

Umm, where did you get that idea? We have no idea how long it took Shakespeare to write his play. Or how long it took Arthur Brooke to write his poem. Perhaps you are thinking of some other Romeo and Juliet, in which case you should specify.

Why did some people doubt shakespeare identity?

Some people wondered if a commoner, such as Wm. Shakespeare, would have the education required to write the plays attributed to him. One theory is that a prominent nobleman or university educated man wrote the plays under Shakespeare's name, but did not think it was appropriate for someone of his stature and position to be associated with such low entertainment for the masses. Various names have been proposed as this mystery ghost writer, with no evidence to support any of them. Shakespeare's identity is well-established by hard evidence: records of his baptism, marriage and death, his grave and monument, legal documents pertaining to the purchase of land and the obtaining of a grant of arms, his will, in which he leaves money to Richard Burbage, John Heminges and Henry Condell, records of the playing company The Lord Chamberlain's Men in which Shakespeare is named along with the said Burbage, Heminges and Condell and others, numerous publications of works over a period of more than 15 years during Shakespeare's lifetime by a number of publishers which are attributed to him, many of which are plays known to be performed exclusively by the said Lord Chamberlain's Men, and finally the publication by the same Heminges and Condell of an omnibus volume of plays including most of those published during Shakespeare's lifetime, in which Shakespeare is praised fulsomely as the author.
