Specifically, Shirley was about the age the Dorothy Gale looks in the illustrations to the original 1900 book edition of "The Wizard of Oz." But she was under contract to Twentieth-Century Fox when MGM was getting ready to film "The Wizard of Oz" in 1938. An exchange of Shirley for MGM actors Clark Gable (February 1, 1901 - November 16, 1960) and Jean Harlowe (b. March 3, 1911) was arranged. But Shirley ended up without the part when arrangements fell through with Jean Harlowe's death on June 7, 1937.
