The Spanish did not bring wild horses to the US. Domesticated horses arrived with the Spaniards but became feral (wild) after they were released, either accidentally or on purpose, into the wild.

The wild Chicoteague ponies of Virginia are believed to be decended from spanish horses that found the island after being shipwrecked at sea while trying to make it to the America's.

The wild Mustangs of the western United States are not really true wild horses. They are what is known as ferel, meaning they were once domesticated but have reverted back to living wild. Horses were first brought to America with the early explorers such as Columbus. These horses are the ancestors of the Mustangs that live today.

The first horses were brought by the Spanish in 1519, Europeans later brought horses of their own. These horses were the only form of land transportation that early explorers had and thus had to be brought over with them or the men would have been on foot and their explorations limited greatly by lack of a way to cover ground efficiently. The original horses brought over were Sorraia, Lusitano, Spanish Jennet, and Spanish Barbs. These horses formed the base for the Mustang.

Later on Europeans brought any horse of sturdy build, whether it was purebred or not and these also helped to develop the Mustang.
