Jefferson didn't treat Sally as a slave, but rather as a helpmeet. He could not have married her, because of the customs (and laws) of the time. In the modern age, he may well have.

∙ 10y agoyes, he did. He freed 2 slaves during his lifetime.(yes, only 2 out of about5,000!!)He freed them in his will after he died though. I think it was kinda pathetic.
