When the slaves were freed, some chose their former owner's last name, and some chose different last names, but they had no last names before then.
the former slave owners were usually wealthy Greeks so they didn't try to make the slaves lives harder but they tried to make their lives easy.
The fugitive slave law required all Americans to turn over any fugitive slave found to law enforcement so they would be sent back to their owners.

actually some slave owners allowed slave marriages and some didn't the ones who didn't allow it didn't allow until the 1900s but the ones who allowed it did it for selfish reasons like if they were married they could have kids and then the salve owners would take them away afterward for slave work. Also the ones who allowed marriage for slaves thought the men would be less rebellious so he wouldn't leave his wife and children and run away. So I hope this answers your questions! <(^.^)>
the more likely answer is that the slave adopted their former owners name, as they did not usually have surnames of their own. Very often, the slaves were called by the owners last name if seen on the streets of a town, and as such it became commonplace that when referred to, the former slaves gave the owners last name as their own. You have to consider the fact that most if not all slaves were never given any kind of education, so the whole concept of reading and writing was something they knew nothing about.
possibly, because a good slave owner would have his slave marry which was illegal.it will be mor likely he got caught ,so most owners dint take the risk
so that they can help them in manual work
So the whites could take their babies and use it as a slave to.
they didnt escape in the daytime, they escaped in the night, so the slave owners couldn't see them
i nthe time of black slave, a slave took the last name of their owner. malcom x became independent of that when he gave up his slave name for the variable x which represents his true last name that he lost to the slave owner. =========================================================== Above is a different answer from what I heard on a different website. Malcolm X isn't his REAL name. The Malcolm was given to him by one of his teachers and the X is an unknown thing in math, so that's how he made his name... Malcolm 'Unknown'

so that they could know if a slave was or was not there, or to see if they were eating the things they may have been picking.
