Best Answer

No. Chicago is too far from the ocean to get hurricanes. Though some storms, including a derecho (squall line with very strong winds) have produced hurricane force winds in the Chicago area.

The remnants of hurricanes can hit Chicago, but by that time they will have long since lost hurricane status.

Yes. Chicago did have a tornado. Unfortunately, the tornado destroyed almost everything in it's path.

The area of present day Chicago may eventually be affected by a tsunami but i would be far in the distant future. This is because tectonic plates move the continents around.

It would be unlikely, since tsumamis generally travel great distances across oceans. However, waves from the Great Lakes could be devastating if an earthquake happened near the Lakes.

Has a hurricane ever hit Illinois?

Not as a hurricane; it would lose tropical characteristics by the time it is that far inland. However, Illinois is affected by the remnants of tropical systems from time to time. For example, in September, 2008, the remnants of Hurricane Ike, which made landfall on the Texas coast, dumped 5 to 7 inches of rain in parts of northern Illinois and Indiana. That caused significant flooding along the DuPage, Des Plaines and Chicago rivers. A state of emergency was declared in Chicago and Cook County because of the flooding.
