Yes, some would work shoeing horses and making various farming tools and should war come (Which is most often did) kings or various nobility would place a commission for a certain number of weapons (IE: we need 50 swords forged, you will get half your payment to get the materials to get started and half once we've received the weapons) Blacksmiths also forged armor quite often, in fact some kings would pay fortunes for a good blacksmith's talents in forging his army's gear or to teach others the craft, if not both, in these cases they would probably be forging almost nothing but weapons, armor and shoes for horses and other various goods for the king.
