During the War of 1812, the United States fought against Great Britain and its various Native allies. France was not a combatant in this war, although hostilities between France and Great Britain in between 1812 and 1814 influenced Great Britain's participation to a considerable extent.

Napoleon Bonaparte was Emperor of France, and had been fighting every other nation of Europe almost non-stop for about twenty years, including Great Britain.

While not directly allied with the US, Napoleon was absorbing at least 90% of the British military effort. The US was not merely unprepared for war but had actively disarmed during the Jefferson and Madison Administrations, before declaring war on the most powerful Empire on the planet. The Americans were exceedingly, extremely fortunate that Napoleon was doing most of the heavy lifting.
