John Wayne did in fact, wear a wig. The Duke felt it was against his image as an American hero to be bald. In a few of his movies if you look carefully you can see the wig flip in some of the fight scenes.

There is a famous question given by a Harvard Student when the Duke was in Boston. Something to the effect of him wearing a cheap wig and the Duke replied. It's true it's not my hair but it sure as hell wasn't cheap.

Hope that hooks you up.

It seems that Wayne began to wear a toupee in 1949 for The Sands of Iwo Jima. He may have worn one slightly before that date, but Iwo Jima was the first film he made with the rug.

Point of Interest: Wayne's hair piece was made by the wig maker to the stars Josephine Turner.

Yes. His hair began thinning in the early 1940's and he began wearing a hairpiece around 1950.

The closest I can come is the Fu Manchu mustache he wore in "The Conqueror" (1956).

He was also unshaven in "3 Godfathers", and had goatees in "Rio Grande" and "The Shootist".

No, but his hair, as with most people, was thinning towards the end of his life.
