King George III of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland married Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelirz on 8th September 1761.

Their 15 children were:

  • George Augustus Frederick, born 12 August 1762. From 1811 he served as Prince Regent during his father's mental illness and became King as George IV when George III died on 29 January 1820. George IV died 26 June 1830.
  • Frederick Augustus born 16 August 1763. Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany became commander in chief of the British Army and was the founder of Sandhurst, the prestigious military academy. He died 5 January 1827.
  • William Henry born 21 August 1765. William was created Duke of Clarence and St Andrews and Earl of Munster in 1789. After a career in The British Navy, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral, he became king as William IV following the death of his brother (George IV) on 26 June 1830. William died 20 June 1837.
  • Charlotte Augusta Maria born 29 September 1766. Her Royal Highness The Princess Charlotte was given the title Princess Royal. On 18 May 1797 she married The Hereditary Prince Frederick of Württemberg and when he succeeded his father she became Duchess of Wurtemburg. Napoleon Bonaparte's army occupied Wurtemburg in 1800 and by a treaty with Napoleon, Prince Frederick Became Elector of Wurtemburg and then King of Wurttemburg with Charlotte as his Queen Consort. Frederick died in 1816 and Charlotte then became Queen Dowager until her death on 5 October 1828.
  • Edward Augustus born 2 November 1767. Prince Edward was a career soldier and had the title Duke of Kent and Strathearn. He was General in The British Army and became commander-in-chief and Field Marshall of the British Forces in North America. In 1794 he became the first British Prince to enter The United States since Independence. As none of his brothers had a legitimate heir, his daughter Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent became Queen Victoria when her uncle, William IV died on 20 June 1837.
  • Augusta Sophia born 8 November 1768. Princess Sophia Augusta devoted most of her time to her numerous siblings and was said to be extremely shy of public appearances. There were some approaches from other European Royal families with a view to a marriage but she never married. She died on 22 September 1840.
  • Elizabeth born 22 May 1770. Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth On 17 April 1818 she married the German Prince Frederick of Hesse-Homburg and when he inherited the title Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg she became his Landgravine. She died 18 January 1840.
  • Ernest Augustus born 5 June 1771. In 1799 Ernest was created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and Earl of Armagh. He was also a Lieutenant-General of both the British and Hanoverian military. As a member of The House of Lords he was active in British politics and his opponents propogated rumours about him, notably that he had killed his valet, fathered a child with his sister, Princess Augusta Sophia, and plotted to kill the future Queen Victoria so that he would become King of the United Kingdom. When Victoria inherited the British Crown, she was unable to inherit the Hanoverian title because of Salic Law and Ernest became Elector of Hanover. He died 18 November 1851.
  • Augustus Frederick born 27 January 1773. Prince Augustus was the only surviving son of George III who did not pursue a military career. In 1793, while travelling in Italy he secretly married Lady Augusta Murray. When news of the marriage came out a Hanoverian official was sent to escort him back to London, where the couple married again - both marriages were without the knowledge or consent of the king and the marriage was annulled in 1794 on the grounds that it was unlawful without the king's consent. The couple continued to live together until 1801. In November 1801 the King created Augustus Duke of Sussex, Earl of Inverness and Baron Arklow. In 1831, he married a second time, again without the consent of the King, to Lady Cecilia Letitia Buggin. His new wife was not licensed as Duchess of Sussex, but was granted the title Duchess of Inverness in her own right by Queen Victoria in 1840. In 1816 Augustus was elected President of the Society of Arts, and was President of The Royal Society between 1830 and 1838. In January 1831 his elder brother (who was at that date King William IV) appointed him Chief Ranger and Keeper of St James and Hyde Parks. Augustus died 21 April 1843.
  • Adolphus Frederick born 24 February 1774. Prince Adolphus had a professional career in the military, becoming ultimately colonel-in-chief of The Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards and of the 60th (The Duke of York's Own Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot. He was created Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Tiperrary and Baron Culloden in November 1801. In 1818 he married his second cousin Princess Augusta of Hesse-Kassel and was maternal grandfather of Mary of Teck making him great-great-grandfather of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He died 8 July 1850.
  • Mary born 25 April 1776. Mary married her first cousin, Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh. She died 30 April 1857, the longest lived and last surviving child of George III.
  • Sophia Matilda born 3 November 1777. Sophia never married and is probably best known for the scurrilous rumours spread that she had a baby fathered by her brother Ernest. These were probably spread by his political opponents who knew that he was deeply unpopular with the British people. Sophia died 27 May 1848.
  • Octavius born 23 February 1779. Prince Octavius died aged four, after receiving a vaccination against smallpox.
  • Alfred born 22 September 1780. Prince Alfred died of smallpox on 20 August 1782, a few weeks short of his second birthday.
  • Amelia born 7 August 1783. Like her other sisters, Princess Amelia was sheltered from public life by her parents and kept isolated from potential suitors. She died from tuberculosis on 2 November 1810, aged 27.

Yes, he had eight, seven of whom lived. George III, who was king after him, was actually his grandson, because his eldest son, Frederick, died before inheriting the throne, but had already had children of his own, so they became the direct heirs instead of George II's other children.
