I think that is a statement one could make about the sculpture and be correct. There is no way to know what Michelangelo was thinking. There are some accounts from this period, most notable is Vasari, see link.
One difference is that Michelangelo preferred sculpture to painting. In painting Leonardo sought the means to make painted figures seem real. For Michelangelo it was important to have his figures look great and awe-inspiring.
