To put it bluntly simple British colonialist arrogance. The British knew that the people that were native to Australia had no power to resist them so they simply did. They had no resistance to speak of so they simply took what they wanted. Had the natives been in a position to organize them selves and offer some sort of effective resistance like the Maoris of NZ it would have been a different story.
