I presume by "poor" you mean the third class passengers. Although their quarters were cramped and their luxury no where near the standard of second and first class passengers' they still did contain "luxuries" that the inhabitants were unused to; running water for example. Interestingly, the class system remained until the Titanic's death, with many of the third class passengers being herded to the stern lower decks to await further instruction. It never came. Indeed, the majority of the dead were in fact third class passangers.
The majority of the passengers was 'poor' by our standards. Practically all the Third Class passengers were poor Europeans, on their way to emigrate to the United States. The majority of the (very numerous) crew members also were minimum wage-earners.
If one defines "poor" as Third-Class then 181 people survived. There were also many members of the "black gang" down in the furnaces who were definitely poor but that amount is not as defined.
They were emigrating to the United States in the hope of starting a better life. Unable to earn a living or have any future prospects in their home countries, they wanted to try and make a fresh start in the USA, hopefully establishing succesful buisnesses, farms or small firms, or at very least getting good jobs that paid decent wages, some of which they could send home to their families.
They came from a huge variety of countries- most were from Ireland or the North of England, but there were also Germans, Italians, Swedes, Norwegians, Iranians, Turks, Chinese, French and Japanese among their numbers.
This classification may be a little severe but one COULD define "poor" as "those in Third-Class", of which 709 passengers sailed Titanic in that status.
However, many of the workers in the boiler rooms, stokers/firemen/trimmers, etc. were, without a doubt, people of limited means.
There were 706 third class passengers on board. Only 178 of them survived
