Yes slavery, during the US Civil War, existed in States which did not secede such as Maryland, Missouri, Kentucky , and Delaware. Until 1862, slavery existed in Washington DC. This is a more direct and efficient response. And, of course in the Confederacy as well.
Yes, some did, but SOME plantation owners were highly against letting slaves fight because they were afraid the slaves would revolt. Your history books won't tell you that less than 3% of southern whites owned more than 20 slaves. Read a book called "Facts the Historians Leave Out" for a clearer picture of what the South was like during the civil war. It is short, and an easy read.
A small number of slaves were forced to actually fight for the Confederacy. Large numbers of slaves were put to work supporting the army, moving supplies and manufacturing goods needed by the soldiers. In general Southerners were fearful of the consequences of arming the Negroes (perhaps rightfully so). One southern leader noted that if the blacks proved to be successful soldiers, then nearly everything the Confederate cause was based upon would prove to be a lie; thus he opposed arming blacks in his state.
The Confederacy made military use of slaves during the war. In one example, Confederate President Jefferson Davis in October of 1862, asked Virginia to furnish 4,500 slaves to work on the fortifications of Richmond. Throughout the war, either as volunteers or under coercion, slaves performed labor to support the war effort. Late in the war, some slaves served in the capacity of soldiers, however, this was not widespread at all. There are numerous small examples of slaves helping the South, however, it was not until March of 1865 the Confederate Congress passed an act authorizing the enlistment of 300,000 slaves into the army.
