The "salute", the "wave" the "handshake" all have their root in the same thing: When a warrior raised his (usually) right hand aloft, it was away from his weapon. It was a visual way of saying: "I mean you no harm". In other words, "I'm a friend". It quickly became a greeting between friends ("Hi!") and remains so today. The military salute is a stylized version of this - and there are many different types of salute.
