At the time of the Civil War, the world was beginning to get smaller as the information age really began when on May 24, 1844, Samuel Morse transmitted these famous words "What has God wrought" through the first successful Telegraph wire. It became popular in the United States and soon in Europe until 1877 when the telephone replaced the telegraph as the main source of communication. Countries on one continent knew what countries were up to in another. Secretary of state William Seward, under President Abraham Lincoln, saw the United States in an embarrassing situation where force is needed to use force to suppress a vocal minority of Americans. To some it seemed that the Southern states, by fighting for their self-determination as a nation, were striking a blow for political freedom and independence in the spirit of similar revolutionaries and national movements in the Old World. Probably the only country who had no problems with slavery was Spain since a majority of its economy was based on the slave trade. Seward made it clear that the United States could not regard as friends those who favored or gave aid to the insurrection under any pretext. In taking this position the United States pointed out that it was claiming only what it conceded to all other nations. Thus, the Civil War clearly determined the official policy of the United States toward self-determination. This policy influenced other possessions of countries to demand self-determination. However, the United States used it's strength and power to influence other countries to take this path. In most cases, it failed in it's missions as the citizens of those countries had different agendas. After the Civil War, the United States domestically still had problems of showing the world the positive in itself as policies almost made the Native American extinct and continued to suppress the rights of minorities again by a vocal minority.

The battle of Gettysburg did several things, it showed the Union army could defeat Lee's army, it showed that the guns General Custer used could be used to defeat a Confederate force ten times larger thus changing the technology used by the Union, and it did a tremendous amount of damage to Lee's army.

Abraham Lincoln was a propounder of peace and the end to the civil war. The importance of the Gettysburg Address sent the uniqueness of the nation's commitment to democracy like a shaft into the opposition. Even though the emphasis on equal justice, unfaltering resolution and the new-world definition of democracy took time to sink in, afterthought invited reconsideration and quick commendation of the truth and appeal in his words.

Lincoln had effectively made the people aware of their rights and declared the government answerable to the people. He redefined democracy as an independent offshoot of citizen will and not some property of the state legislatures. The political orator stylistically delivered the address to consistently initiate inquiry and political shift, even after his death. His belief in the power of a democratic form of government sparked numerous varying interpretations.

The Gettysburg Address can be now viewed on the south wall of the Lincoln Memorial. This Lincoln Address has shown an enduring manifestation in American culture. It is an inseparable part of numerous works in popular culture, designed for contemporary audiences. Martin Luther King Jr. referred to the political orator as 'a great American' and the Gettysburg address as 'a great beacon light and hope to millions'. Democracies around the world have now adopted the definition of democracy from the very words of Abraham Lincoln.
