At the Battle of the Little Big Horn, on June 25-26, 1876, the US 7th Cavalry suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of a superior force of Native American tribes, mainly the Sioux. Its commander, George Armstrong Custer, perished along with more than 260 of his men, notably at the skirmish known as Custer's Last Stand. The battle took place in the Montana Territory, near the present Crow Indian settlement of Crow Agency, in southern Montana near the Wyoming border.

The Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho were led by chiefs Crazy Horse, Gall, and Sitting Bull, who fought in the Great Sioux War (1876-1877).

George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry underestimated the strength of the combined Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho army. Custer's regiment was nearly completely wiped out. Custer himself was killed and his body mutilated.

The Native Americans effected by the Indian Removal Act harbor a great deal of mistrust and animosity to the American Government and its people as a result of the Indian Removal Act. This was compounded by the Homestead Act that allowed Americans to take land from Native Americans.

Generally speaking the tribes rebounded from the significant deaths caused by the forced relocation, some tribes did much better than others. The Cherokee were afraid to sign or deal with the government for around 100 years (the original treaty signers for the removal act were publicly murdered, under the law of the snake). Different factions formed within the tribes and survive to this day, broken down as: those who accept European government and value systems, those who accept some, and those who accept none of these values.

No. The whites viewed Little Bighorn as a massacre of Custer and the 7th Cavalry. This infuriated the U.S. government, who quickly sent out more soldiers as well as settlers, who raided and attacked other groups of Native Americans.

The battle of the Little Big Horn saw the divided forces of Union commander George Custer defeated by a large number of Native American warriors. The result was a determined effort by Washington DC to place Native Americans on government designated reservations. This was not the way the Native Tribes wished to be treated.

It was a bitter victory, with the Indians on the run. Some made it to

safety in Canada but most eventually were forced onto reservations.
