Prior to the Russian Revolution of 1917, the lives of ordinary people were deplorable. People who worked as farmers or in factories lived in poverty and there seemed no legal way to change their circumstance. The country was ruled by Czar Nicholas. After the revolution and removal of the Czar, the Soviets took over and established a Congress that proposed getting rid of private property so that the people could own the land. Likewise, the factories would be run by the workers.

The Communist rule gripped the average Russian like an iron fist. To have a cow was considered being rich. one of the first acts of the Soviet government was the seizing of all livestock and crops, since one could no "sell it for profit". The Soviets also took the old monarchy and replaced it with a Dictatorship. one of the worst dictators was Josef Stalin. He would randomly send his own citizens to the gulags, the forced labor camps, or have them killed. today every family has a Stalin story. Nikita Khrushchev took many homes and apartments and simply cut them in half. Many families were force to live in one of these tiny apartments with 3-4 other families. Companies were forced to buy products from within the USSR, and could only sell within the USSR. gradually this lead to market failure as many businesses went under. Gorbachev (the only leader of the Soviet government not to die of a "stroke") instituted Perestroika in an attempt to open up trade with foreign countries. and this lead to the end of the communist rule.

The Revolution in Russia occured as a reaction to the poverty which was endured by the average Russian at the time. It did not actually benefit many people substantially and resulted in only a modest improvement is the daily lives of some people. People who lived in comparative wealth, however, lost much of their assets.

How strong and experienced was the German army during World War 1 compared to the Russian army?

The Tzar's Russian military in WWI (1914) was still feeling the negative effects from the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. Russia was on the verge of revolution in 1905...and that revolution came to light in 1917...right in the middle of WWI. Therefore, the German army of WWI was stronger and better organized. The Russian Army was better experienced due to the Russian-Japanese war...but it was disorganized and demoralized due to it's pending revolution.

Did the Russians living under the czars have a high standard of living?

The vast majority of Russians were peasant farmers barely staying alive on what they grew on the small plots of land they worked for the people who owned the land. Until 1861 they were serfs, bound to the land owned by the nobles and unable to move elsewhere to better themselves. Once serfdom was abolished they were still bound to the land for about 49 years after their "freedom" because they had to pay the nobles for the land the government took from them and gave to the peasants. This low standard of living was one of the major causes of the Russian Revolution.

When and why Russians came to Canada?

The Russians left their home to have a better life, to speak freely, for equal rights, be allowed to move from place to place, a better education, better jobs, and a good government who were fair. Russian settlement began in the 19th century. The Czars were making evil choices on how to rule. The Russians people didn't like that the Czars were basically dictators. The civilians were depressed and they feared the Czar's army because the were mean and deadly. The Russians were not allowed to leave the country unless they were kicked out. Because they couldn't leave, they started a war. They came to Canada mainly for a better life. I did some recharch and did not copy and worte it in my own words
