Absolute monarchies served a societal need when they were instituted and were replaced when they were no longer able meet the new societal changes that arose in the pre modern era.

The absolute monarchies were an improvement over the chaos that followed the fall of the Roman Empire and the subsequent dark ages. One need only compare the development of medieval France and that of the neighboring territories of the Holy Roman Empire to see the advantages of centralized power in restoring the conditions necessary for economic growth and the advancement of culture.

The rise of civil society under the stability cultivated by the successful monarchies led to more complex societies with needs which could no longer be met by a single ruler. Some absolute monarchies transitioned into constitutional monarchies which continue to this day. Others resisted the transition in power leading to often violent revolutions which served their societies less well.

Does Europe have monarchy?

There are many European countries who have monarchies today, such as the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, etc. Almost all of these are constitutional monarchies, where the monarch is the head of state, but there is also a political body (such as a parliament) where most of the power resides. Vatican City is the only European country to be an absolute monarchy, where the Pope is the absolute monarch. All other European countries, with the exception of Belarus (who is a dictatorship), are republics or representative democracies.

Why am i aweseom?

An absolute monarch is a head of state who governs unconstrained by any substantive constitutional law. The advantages of Absolute Monarchy lie in the concentration of power and responsibility in the person of the monarch. Where the local culture includes no tradition of peaceful power sharing, absolute monarchy may be an attractive alternative. The disadvantages can be readily discerned from the very small list of nations which continue to be ruled by absolute monarchs. While these nations may be adequately governed most nations have moved away from this system of government. Of those that remain Absolute Monarchies most are small and economically underdeveloped. All remaining Absolute Monarchies appear on the list of failed nation states.
